Special Blog Post - Bioluminescence - because it was just so cool

In Ensenada Sunbay on the night of May 8th, mom started washing dishes on the back deck of the boat. When she waved the dishes around in the water we saw little tiny lights all bunched together making what looked like one HUGE light all around the spoon she had waved around. They were bioluminescent dinoflagellates, a type of algae (we looked that up). We were so amazed that we quickly took off our clothes and jumped in the water. When we jumped in all around us lit up. When we swam and moved, the water lit up between our arms and legs. We made bioluminescent angels in the water, just like snow angels. It was so cool. We tried to get videos but there was not enough light so all the videos were black. We had to get in and out of the water several times because it rained on and off (we had a camera, iPad, and other things out that we had to take inside). When we moved slowly we could see the individual specs of light. When we slowly lifted our arms and legs out of the water we could see them falling off. All and all it was really cool. I don’t think I have seen anything like that before. They lit up EVERYTHING.
Since we couldn't get a picture ourselves, we borrowed this one from the internet to show you what it looked like to us:

One last comment so we don't get in trouble - we were in Ensenada Sunbay, not the neighboring Mosquito Bioluminescent Bay to the east. It is a protected bay that does not allow swimming because sunscreen and insect repellents can damage the ecosystem and kill the bioluminescence.

Hi Kaylee, I have finally had time to catch up on your blog. Love the pics with your grandparents and also how you know the names of all the sea creatures. Thanks for the tutorial on bioluminesence! I have heard of that but have never seen it. I know you will remember that swim for a long time! Keep writing, I'm enjoying your blog.
